BMF 98 - Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a family of >4,730 compounds – produced since the 1940s – that are of anthropogenic origin.
Although PFAS are remarkably useful in many industries, they are an emerging concern to environmental health for all living beings, including humans.
PFAS are used in many major industries, including:
- Aerospace and defense eg fuel pump seals for protecting against fuel loss
- Transportation eg durable interior surfaces in trains
- Construction eg water-resistant building materials
- Electronics eg heat transfer in semiconductor processing
- Healthcare eg implantable medical devices
Chiron's latest issue of BMF 98 provides awareness of the applications, concerns and regulations associated with PFAS and introduces the available reference materials to monitor their use.
